Actually I wonder why we think Buddha is the chubby guy that your supposed to rub his belly. He's actually a skinny little guy that lived in a tree for some period of time (I forget how long though)

He's actually a skinny little guy that lived in a tree for some period of time (I forget how long though) The fat guy is Maitreya. Or at least an incarnation of Maitreya called Budai. He's the NEXT Buddha. Right now he's in a stage called a Bodhisutva (sanskrit meaning "destined to be enlightened") which is the preliminary stage to becoming a fully awakened Buddha. Essentially in each of his lives he'll make strides that gets him closer and closer to enlightenment until he finally hits it (probably a few million years from now, according the Buddhist timelines). But yeah, no, he's not the Buddha yet. The above is all from memory, so I apologize if I got anything wrong.
